Dílo rozhodujícího významu pro historii německé i světové prózy, je jedním z prototypů romantického románu v dopisech, založeného na prosté klasické zápletce. Autorovi šlo o víc, než o příběh nešťastné lásky. Jako hrdinu zvolil člověka své doby, představitele mladé buržoazie, který ve snaze dosáhnout svobody naráží na překážky v podobě feudálních konvencí. Je příliš osamělý a neschopný proti společnosti bojovat a proto raději volí smrt.
