J. W. Goethe napsal Utrpení mladého Werthera ve svých čtyřiadvaceti letech a rázem se stal vůdčí postavou nové německé literatury. Inspirován prožitkem neopětované lásky, stvořil emblematické dílo německého Sturm und Drang hnutí bouře a vzdoru namířeného proti estetice klasicismu, proti zkostnatělé společnosti vyznávající nade vše pouze rozum a řád. Goethův hlavní hrdina naslouchá význam vlastního srdce, nechává se unášet city a krásu hledá daleko od lidí, v nespoutané přírodě, kde je člověk jedině svobodný. Německý preromantismus našel ve Wertherovi svůj počátek i vrchol zároveň.
