Steve Tesich, geboren in Servië en op vijftienjarige leeftijd naar Amerika geëmigreerd, schreef vele toneelstukken en filmscenario’s, waaronder The World According to Garp en het met een Oscar bekroonde Breaking Away. Hij overleed in 1996, kort nadat hij het manuscript van zijn enige roman had voltooid. Het boek werd twee jaar later uitgegeven en is een bestseller in Duitsland en Frankrijk.

Tensions rise as black drug dealers clash with Cuban cops, while spectators at the Columbus Day Regatta seek out post-race festivities. Amidst this vibrant chaos, ex-New Yorkers at an "Active Adult" condo and a group of shady Russians contribute to the city's eclectic tapestry.
