Místo toho se setkala se dvěma mimozemskými rasami ve vyhnanství – rytíři Tanu, kteří si z cestujících v čase udělali své otroky, a trpasličími Firvulagy, zuřivými soupeři Tanu. Na konci Zlatého náhrdelníku jedna členka skupiny lidí, Felice Landryová, způsobila děsivé kataklyzma a ukončila nadvládu Tanu nad pliocénní Evropou. V Nezrozeném králi Aiken Drum, mladý člověk s ohromnými mentálními silami, uchvátil tanuský trůn. Aiken čelí opozici Tanu, kteří nenávidí lidi, svobodných lidí, kteří nedůvěřují jeho fantastickým mentálním silám, šílené Felice, která přísahala, že ho zničí, a posílených Frivilagů, kteří teď početně vysoce převyšují Tanu-lidskou koalici, již Aiken sestavil.
