Vydejte se zpátky do osmdesátých let, do zlatých časů lovení monster, kdy v Bílém domě seděl Ronald Reagan, Ray a Susan Shacklefordovi patřili k nejlepším lovcům a sushi v Seattlu se ještě dalo jíst. Když byl svobodník Oliver Chadwick Gardenier zabit při bombovém útoku v Bejrútu, někdo, možná svatý Petr, mu dal na výběr – pojď do nebe, kde je to pěkné, ale trochu nudné, nebo se vrať na Zemi. Šéf pro tebe má úkol, jen musíš najít znamení. Chad si jako správný mariňák vybral další misi. Bohužel, tím znamením má být číslo 57, které je i na každé druhé láhvi s kečupem. Bohudík, součásti mise byla i práce ve společnosti, která se jmenuje Lovci monster. Tam Chada naučili, jak se správně oblékat na jogging (nenápadná zbroj a větší počet zbraní), jak navazovat kontakty v jakuze a proč není dobrý nápad vtipkovat před trolly o kozlech, a pak ho poslali chránit lidi před vším, co se je (nejen) v noci snaží sežrat. A pak už šlo všechno jenom z kopce.

Za cenu strašlivých obětí. Vorpalový meč hovoří o celé řadě zásadních témat, která se pohybují od toho, jaká zbraň je nejlepší k zabití mimozemského monstra, přes částicovou fyziku až ke kosmologii, a je návratem „starých zlatých časů“ vědeckofantas­tických románů, kdy byly vědecké problémy zábavné, ženy chytré, tvrdé a krásné, a netvoři oškliví. Mariňáci vyrážejí do boje a lidstvo dobývá vesmír. Hlavně aby bylo dost lepicí pásky…

S vypětím všech sil si lidstvo vybojovalo cenný čas na přípravy proti další fázi invaze Posleenů mířící na Zemi. Šance oklepat se z bitev a připravit se na nejhorší bude jenom jedna. Začíná hra o všechno a Posleeni pravidla rozhodně nečtou.

Jo, jasně - a ještě přijít na to, jak zabránit těm bráním v dalším otevírání. Brány se ale šíří a nepřátelští mimozemšťané se šíří s nimi, takže je na Weaverovi a poddůstojníkovi jednotek SEAL Millerovi, aby zjistili, jak si s tím vším poradit. Potíž spočívá v tom, že jediný způsob, jak zachránit Zemi, je v podstatě její zničení. Pak už by ale nebyly žádné přítelkyně, ani mobily, ani šéfové... Tak dobře, dvě z těchto tří věcí jsou špatné.
