La fama di Edgar Allan Poe è legata principalmente ai suoi celebri racconti, ma le sue poesie non sono di minor fascino e hanno assunto un preciso significato nella storia della lirica moderna. Una di esse, Il Corvo, ebbe tanto successo da procurare allo scrittore il nomignolo di «Mr. Raven» («signor Corvo», appunto). In essa compare il nero uccello simbolo dell’inquieto messaggio di Poe, sibillinamente gracchiando a tutte le domande la medesima risposta: «Mai più». Queste poesie, esaltate da Baudelaire e mirabilmente tradotte in prosa da Mallarmé, rappresentano un’anticipazione del simbolismo. Non eccedono però mai nel cerebrale, creando invece effetti di intensa emotività. Scriveva Emilio Cecchi che in Poe «logica e lirica, simbolo e senso, istinto e volontà… si organizzano in una sorta di nuova dimensione estetica, a prezzo di una tensione da lui sofferta fino all’isteria.
