Společenské systémy jsou výrazně odlišné, a proto i izolované. Hlavní hrdina se snaží tento stav změnit. Obyvatel planety Anarres, fyzik jménem Shevek, nedokáže nikdy rezignovat na právo na osobitost a svobodu a proto se cítí nešťastný jako člen společnosti ideálně rovných. Jediným východiskem z této situace se mu zdá být emigrace na sousední, nepřátelskou planetu Urras. Žár pouště, mráz Antarktidy, stín lesa. Cestování časem i kosmické lodě. Nezáleží na tom, jaké kulisy a jaké žánrové propriety „královna americké sci-fi“ zvolila, vždycky byla svá. A vždycky šlo především o řeč, myšlenky a touhy jejích neuvěřitelně uvěřitelných hrdinek a hrdinů, vždycky šlo mnohem víc o literaturu než o žánrové škatulky. Čtyřiadvacet pečlivě vybraných povídek z autorčiny tvorby. Obsahuje povídky humorné, poetické, nostalgické i surrealistické, vždy však obsahují fantastický prvek.
