Florian Coulmas, 1949 in Hamburg geboren, kam zum ersten Mal 1971 während des Studiums nach Japan, wo er später an einer der großen Hochschulen in Tokyo lehrte. 1999 kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück. Er ist Professor für Sprache und Kultur des modernen Japan an der Universität Duisburg-Essen.
