Thick clouds lay low over the dark surface of the Adrea, whose shores and waters were melted together in undistinguishable gloom; only now and then a flash of distant lightning lit up the silent city of Ravenna. At unequal intervals the wind swept through the ilexes and pines on the range of hills which rise at some distance to the west of the town, and which were once crowned by a temple of Neptune. At that time already half ruined, it has now almost completely disappeared, leaving only the most scanty traces.

On the evening of the third day after the arrival of the Gothic escort sent by Totila, Valerius had terminated his arrangements and fixed the next morning for his departure from the villa. He was sitting with Valeria and Julius at the evening meal, and speaking of the prospect of preserving peace, which was no doubt undervalued by the young hero, Totila, who was filled with the ardour of war. Felix Dahn (1834-1912) war ein deutscher Professor, Schriftsteller und Historiker. In seinen Werken, darunter "Kleine Romane aus der Völkerwanderung", kombiniert er historische Erzählungen mit fesselnden Charakteren. Das Buch beschreibt eine spannende Szene, in der Protagonisten in einem Versteck auf ein Pferd treffen und um ihr Überleben kämpfen.
