Tristram, rampollo di una nevrotica famiglia i cui membri sono tutti vittime di strane ossessioni, è il protagonista e l'io narrante dell'opera più famosa di Sterne, che può a ragione essere considerata una sorta di prototipo del romanzo moderno.
