Stalo se tak čtyři roky po předčasné smrti Iana Fleminga, jenž odvážného agenta 007 stvořil a napsal o něm během pouhých jedenácti let celkem čtrnáct románů. Kingsley Amis na postavu stvořenou svým zesnulým přítelem navazuje na jednu stranu s pietou, ale zároveň nezapře vlastní rukopis. Jeho Bond je možná trochu sarkastičtější, napsaný s větším odstupem a ironií. Po únosu Bondova šéfa M na fiktivní řecký ostrov Vrakonisi se rozehrává důmyslný souboj mezi ďábelským a všehoschopným čínským plukovníkem Sunem a Bondem, který přijíždí svého nadřízeného osvobodit. Aby se mu podařilo překazit úkladné čínské pletichy ohrožující světový mír, musí se dokonce spojit s jiným nepřítelem, s ruskými špiony. Jeho partnerkou na jednu knihu se stává ruská špionka. Autor nešetří popisem krásné řecké přírody a výborné kuchyně (opakovaně Řecko navštívil), přesto má děj spád dobře vystavěného špionážního thrilleru, jak se na dobrodružství Jamese Bonda sluší a patří.
