This text is concerned with the statistical theory for locating spatial sensors. It bridges the gap between spatial statistics and optimum design theory and the reader will find respective theory and recommendations on how to plan efficiently a specific-purpose spatial monitoring network.

The 3rd International Workshop on „Model oriented Data-Analysis“ took place at St. Petersburg University, Russia, May 25-30, 1992. The conference covers theoretical and applied statistics with a heavy emphasis on experimental design. The corresponding approaches are fundamentally based onthe idea that a system (object and experiment) has to be described by some mathematical model to make any experimental design reasonable. This fact has mainly motivated the choice of the workshop's title. This proceedings volume consists of three main parts: I Optimal Design II Statistical Applications III Stochastic Optimization.
