As a student at the University of Cape Town's German Department, the author encountered Goethe's "Iphigenie auf Tauris," which raised unsettling questions for him. Later, he published a scholarly article on the play in "The German Quarterly." In retirement, he wondered why there was no opera adaptation and began working on a libretto.
