Černá komedie o třinácti obrazech – takřka kafkovská noční můra o člověku násilně vystaveném „objetí zdánlivě milující rodiny“. Autor získal za toto drama v roce 1967 Tanizakiho cenu.

Kóbó Abe již v úvodu prozrazuje klíčové prvky napínavého příběhu. Hlavní hrdina, neuspokojený učitel a manžel, zmizí beze stopy během entomologické výpravy za brouky Cicindelidae, v naději, že objeví nový druh, který mu přinese nesmrtelnost. Po sedmi letech je oficiálně prohlášen za nezvěstného. I přes tuto zdánlivě bezvýchodnou situaci, kdy je čtenář obeznámen s hlavní zápletkou, se příběh rozvíjí realistickým popisem hrdinovy snahy uniknout z absurdní situace, v níž je uvězněn v písečné jámě. Zde se setkává s lidmi, pro které je tato past přijatelná, neboť jim zajišťuje každodenní potřeby jako jídlo, vodu a dokonce i sex, jehož kvality si hrdina mohl jen představovat ve svém nešťastném manželství. Po několika měsících zajetí, kdy mu je umožněno odejít, si uvědomuje, že už nemá žádný důvod se vracet. O věhlas knihy se zasloužila také filmová adaptace od režiséra Hirošiho Tešigahara z roku 1964, která vzbudila pozornost na festivalu v Cannes, i když nezískala Zlatou palmu.

Vědeckofantastický román o vědci, kterému výbuch znetvořil tvář. Přes veškeré úsilí lékařů zústává natolik zohyzděn, že se může pohybovat mezi lidmi pouze s obvázaným obličejem. Neschopen kontaktu s okolím, stává se anonymní, záhadnou bytostí bez tváře. Chce však takovému postavení čelit a vyrobí si dokonalou masku, která mu umožní návrat mezi lidi. Změněná podoba však změní i jeho chování. Zkouší svou novou tvář a své nové já v nejrůznějších situacích – avšak život s tváří „toho druhého“ vyústí v hlubokou rozpolcenost a manželskou roztržku.

Zabýval se předválečnou avantgardou, zejména surrealismem. Ve své práci si volí fantastické náměty a používá postupů vědecko-fantastické literatury ve spojení se současnou realitou.
