Maurice Leblanc Knihy
Maurice Leblanc byl francouzský romanopisec, nejlépe známý jako tvůrce postavy zloděje gentlemana (později detektiva) Arsèna Lupina. Leblanc začínal jako novinář, dokud nebyl požádán, aby napsal krátký povídkový výplňový text, a vytvořil postavu galantnější a oslnivější než její anglický protějšek Sherlock Holmes. Jeho díla zkoumají témata zločinu, spravedlnosti a společenské třídy prostřednictvím šarmantních a důmyslných dobrodružství svého slavného hrdiny.

Galantní lupič Arsène Lupin vypráví o svých nejzábavnějších kouscích – o dvojnásobné krádeži vzácné sbírky gobelínů, o ženitbě s jednou z nejbohatších nevěst Francie, o krádeži portmonky, jež ho málem stojí život, o konečně o vtipném oloupení „strašáka“, kterému pak dobrovolně vyplácí doživotní rentu.
Arsen Lupin se snaží očistit oběť justičního omylu, musí bojovat proti vyděrači, držiteli kompromitujících dokumentů ukrytých v křišťálové zátce.
Lupič gentleman je, jak dobře vědí zasvěcení čtenáři, trvalým přídomkem Arséna Lupina, ovšem v tomto svazku si čtenáři kromě Lupinova dobrodružství přečtou další dvě detektivky, v nichž se trestného činu dopouštějí velice ctihodní detektivové, neochvějně stojící na stráži zákona – Sherlock Holmes a August Dupin.

Maurice Marie Émile Leblanc (1864-1941) was a French novelist and short story writer, best known for creating the gentleman thief and detective Arsène Lupin, often seen as a French counterpart to Sherlock Holmes. The first Arsène Lupin story was serialized in the magazine Je sais tout starting on July 15, 1905. Leblanc's inspiration may have come from earlier works featuring gentleman thieves. By 1907, he began writing full-length Lupin novels, dedicating much of his career to this character, despite his occasional resentment towards Lupin's popularity. He attempted to create other characters, such as private eye Jim Barnett, but ultimately merged them with Lupin. Leblanc continued to write Lupin stories into the 1930s. He also authored notable science fiction novels, including Les Trois Yeux (1919) and Le Formidable Evènement (1920). Awarded the Légion d'Honneur for his literary contributions, he passed away in Perpignan and is buried in Montparnasse Cemetery. Arsène Lupin, initially named Arsène Lopin until a local politician protested, appeared in 17 novels and 39 novellas, with adaptations in various media. He is a literary descendant of Rocambole and shares traits with E. W. Hornung's A. J. Raffles, influencing later characters like The Lone Wolf and The Saint.

The creator of Arsene Lupin, Maurice Leblanc, was born in Rouen in 1864. At the request of a Paris magazine, Je Sais Tout, he began a series of stories featuring the character Lupin, a 'gentleman thief', which appeared in this publication, starting in 1907. The blueprint for this new magazine was England's Strand Magazine in which Conan Doyle had first introduced his character Sherlock Holmes. The stories were wildly successful and later led to plays, TV adaptations and movies. The most memorable of these adaptations for an anglophone audience being the recent (but ongoing) Netflix series Lupin, starring Omar Sy. However, before this, in 1919 Agatha Christie reportedly considered basing her first detective on Lupin. Jean Cocteau wrote about the stories in his diaries, Sartre described Lupin as the Cyrano of the underworld. When Leblanc died in 1941 Ellen Queen pronounced him as the greatest thief in the whole world. Even T. S. Eliot was an avid reader of Lupin stories. The translation by Texeira da Matos is immaculate and reads as effortlessly today as it would have done in 1907 when this collection was first published. The book comprises 9 stories: THE ARREST OF ARSENE LUPIN ARSENE LUPIN IN PRISON THE ESCAPE OF ARSENE LUPIN THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELLER THE QUEEN'S NECKLACE THE SEVEN OF HEARTS MADAME IMBERT'S SAFE THE BLACK PEARL SHERLOCK HOLMES ARRIVES TOO LATE
