Portugalsko se tak stane kompromisem i pro to, aby mohl vyhovět manželčině touze po zvláštních turistických zážitcích. Během této ne zcela běžné dovolené Garnet zažije řadu veselých, místy až groteskních situací i pohrom, v nichž se může turista ocitnout díky lákadlům exotické ciziny. Přestože Amis tento román napsal už v r. 1958, najdeme v něm nejen jeho typický, svěží humor, ale též osvědčená témata – cestování, dovolená či kontrast mužského a ženského pohledu na svět. K pohodě při jeho četbě velkou měrou přispívá výborný překlad Ivo Šmoldase.

V sedmi povídkách sleduje klasik anglického humoru s vlídnou ironií malicherné a všelijak nedokonalé lidičky, jejich předstírané i špatně tajené city. Přestože je jejich vztah zprvu založen na fyzické přitažlivosti a přitažlivosti Ronieho k Simoniným penězům, oba se do sebe zamilují. Pětici seniorů, tři muže a dvě ženy, odsoudily jejich životní osudy k tomu, aby závěr života trávili společně v chátrajícím a osamělém venkovském domě. Všem už je přes sedmdesát, ale s žádným z nich život nezacházel příliš pěkně. Někteří se nemají navzájem moc rádi a chovají se k sobě podle toho, skrytě či otevřeně; v žádném případě nejde o soudržnou partu starců, kteří se snaží jeden druhému ulehčovat břemeno věku. Jejich soužití má v důsledku vzájemné nevraživosti často groteskně trapný, absurdní ráz (Amis byl v líčení takových situací skutečný mistr), ale i když se při čtení často výborně bavíme, občas nám z toho všeho takříkajíc trnou zuby. A konec příběhu leckoho z nás přímo zmrazí.

Bondovku Plukovník Sun (1968) napsal Kingsley Amis pod pseudonymem Robert Markham. Stalo se tak čtyři roky po předčasné smrti Iana Fleminga, jenž odvážného agenta 007 stvořil a napsal o něm během pouhých jedenácti let celkem čtrnáct románů. Kingsley Amis na postavu stvořenou svým zesnulým přítelem navazuje na jednu stranu s pietou, ale zároveň nezapře vlastní rukopis. Jeho Bond je možná trochu sarkastičtější, napsaný s větším odstupem a ironií. Po únosu Bondova šéfa M na fiktivní řecký ostrov Vrakonisi se rozehrává důmyslný souboj mezi ďábelským a všehoschopným čínským plukovníkem Sunem a Bondem, který přijíždí svého nadřízeného osvobodit. Aby se mu podařilo překazit úkladné čínské pletichy ohrožující světový mír, musí se dokonce spojit s jiným nepřítelem, s ruskými špiony. Jeho partnerkou na jednu knihu se stává ruská špionka. Autor nešetří popisem krásné řecké přírody a výborné kuchyně (opakovaně Řecko navštívil), přesto má děj spád dobře vystavěného špionážního thrilleru, jak se na dobrodružství Jamese Bonda sluší a patří.

V průběhu celé anabáze se hrdina zvolna dopracovává názoru, že se již nadále nenechá tyranizovat společenskými normami sexuální revoluce a výsledky dlouhodobé léčby je jeho proměna z misogyna v misantropa.

If recitation has died out in the family circle, reading aloud has not, and it is as material for this that the editor's anthology is ideally intended.
