Der bedeutende Australienforscher Ludwig Leichhardt (1813-1848?) stammt vom Schwielochsee in der Mark Brandenburg und hat sieben Jahre erfolgreich das Gymnasium Cottbus besucht. Seine umfassenden Kenntnisse, vor allem in Geologie, Zoologie und der Botanik, erwarb er sich an den Universitäten Berlin und Göttingen, besonders aber an den naturgeschichtlichen Museen in London und Paris. Als Vorbereitung auf seine geplanten Expeditionen in Australien startete er im September 1840 von Paris aus zu einer neunmonatigen Reise durch Süd-Frankreich, Italien und die Schweiz, um seine neu erworbenen Kenntnisse in der Praxis anzuwenden. Besonders intressierte er sich für den quartären und rezenten Vulkanismus in der Auvergne und in Mittel-Italien, aber auch für die Meerestiere der Bucht von Neapel und die Pflanzenwelt der durchreisten Gebiete.
