In un giallo di Agatha Christie, quello che conta è la fine, l’assassinio: che risolve la trama, gli incastri del libro. In uno di Raymond Chandler, l’assassino diventa quasi superfluo: le connessioni, l’atmosfera, i dialoghi bastano a se stessi; a volte è difficile persino capire perché l’assassino è l’assassino, e il libro non perde valore. Anzi. I disarmati assomiglia più a Chandler che a Agatha Christie. La fine è arrivata improvvisa : non voluta, non cercata. Ma era già scritta nel ritmo e nel senso del libro. Luca Rossi ha passato un anno in Sicilia, cercando i protagonisti e i sopravvissuti della battaglia antimafia degli anni ottanta : i poliziotti della Squadra Mobile di Palermo, i magistrati del pool di Giovanni Falcone. Il filo rosso che lega la storia è la morte di Ninni Cassarà, vicequestore capo della sezione investigativa di Palermo, ucciso dai kalashnikov il 6 agosto 1985. Gli impedimenti, gli ostacoli, le inerzie del sistema che ha sprecato energie e mezzi e vite di uomini, i tradimenti, i perché, le vie trasversali di cui approfitta la mafia, gli interessi di casta e quelli personali, diventano una trama, come in un romanzo; è così che un’inchiesta giornalistica accurata, con interviste esclusive e del tutto inedite, si è trasformata lentamente in una detective story, in un giallo che sembrava senza fine. Poi, hanno ucciso Giovanni Falcone.
