Historický román je inspirován obdobím protibritského povstání sípáhiů v Indii v roce 1857. Vypráví o skupince koloniálních úředníků a důstojníků v Krišnapuru, sdružených kolem správce okresu, komunitě, kde vládne duch viktoriánského osvícenství a puritánství, která musí čelit záplavě vzbouřenců. Během čtyřměsíční blokády z rozmazlených a nadřazených Angličanů pozvolna opadává nátěr civilizace, trpí hladem, strachem a nemocemi a jejich dosavadní svět se otřásá v základech. Název odkazuje na irské nepokoje z let 1919–1921, jež vyústily v partyzánskou válku za nezávislost a přispěly k rozpadu Britského impéria, ale odkazuje také na milostná trápení anglického majora Brendana Archera, který si z válečných zákopů přijíždí do Irska pro snoubenku, na zhoršující se problémy se správou kdysi honosného hotelu Majestát a nemalé těžkosti hostů, kteří v něm zůstali.
