George Augustus Moore byl irský romanopisec, prozaik, básník, umělecký kritik, pamětník a dramatik. Původně se chtěl stát malířem a v 70. letech 19. století studoval umění v Paříži, kde se spřátelil s předními francouzskými umělci a spisovateli. Jako naturalistiký autor absorboval lekce francouzských realistů, zejména Émila Zoly, a ovlivnil Jamese Joyce. Mooreovo dílo je často považováno za první velké moderní irské románové dílo.
