Polemická korespondence mezi německým polyhistorem G. W. Leibnizem a anglickým teologem, fyzikem a Newtonovým žákem S. Clarkem, která se rozvinula ve druhém desetiletí 18. století, patří k vůbec nejznámějším a nejvlivnějším korespondenčním výměnám v dějinách evropského myšlení. Korespondence sestává z pěti Leibnizových francouzsky psaných dopisů a právě tolika Clarkových anglicky psaných odpovědí. Jejím ústředním tématem jsou jednak základy Newtonova převratného matematicko-fyzikálního výkladu skutečnosti, jednak důsledky, které takový výklad má na polích matematiky, teorie poznání, teologie a přírodní filosofie. Vliv pozic obou korespondentů sahá až k formulaci Einsteinovy obecné teorie relativity. Její české vydání tak poskytne vítaný a potřebný materiál mj. i teoretikům a historikům přírodní vědy.
