Independent education programs, self-organized urban planning, and artistic practices in the field of scientific research, among other initiatives, have unfolded over the last few years. This report maps and analyzes the intricate relationships between contemporary art and its commercial markets. It discusses contemporary art as both an asset and a celebrity accessory, the rise of art fairs, and the growing competition among auction houses. Contributions from academics, theorists, and artists explore how the globalization and commercialization of the market influence the production, presentation, and perception of art, while some argue that the market's fundamental structure remains unchanged. The essays provoke critical questions about the future of art and the role of artists in 2022. Published as part of the curated project Abstract Possible: The Stockholm Synergies, the report is associated with Tensta konsthall, the Center for Fashion Studies at Stockholm University, and the auction house Bukowskis, all located in Stockholm, and was released in early 2012. This marks the beginning of an ongoing publication series co-published by Sternberg Press and Tensta konsthall, with design by Metahaven.

One of the most significant shifts in contemporary art during the past two decades concerns artists and collectives who have moved their artistic focus from representation to direct social action. This publication shows why this transition might change our understanding of artistic production at large and make us reconsider the role of art in society. The book gathers internationally recognized artists, scholars, and experts in the field of socially engaged art to reflect upon historical developments in this field and explore the role that German artist Joseph Beuys?s concept of social sculpture played in its evolution. Der Amerikaner Richard Serra zählt zu den bedeutendsten Bildhauern des 20. Jahrhunderts, seine Arbeit 'Terminal' zu den Meilensteinen in der Geschichte der Skulptur. Mit diesem Werk wurde 1977 erstmals eine von Richard Serras Außenraumskulpturen dauerhaft im Stadtraum aufgestellt. Immer noch fremd stellt sich die Skulptur auch heute noch der städtischen Architektur entgegen und markiert hierin eine neue Qualität für eine Kunst im öffentlichen Raum.
