John Leighton byl anglický umělec, který se proslavil svými ilustracemi a návrhy knižních obalů. Svůj talent pro design uplatnil již v raném díle „Suggestions in Design...“ (1852), kde rozebíral historii designu a své vlastní přesvědčení. Tento umělec byl také jedním z prvních, kdo studoval exlibris a podporoval jejich sběratelství, což vedlo k založení Společnosti exlibris, jejímž byl viceprezidentem. Leightonovy práce se opíraly o bohatou historii dekorativního umění a jeho styl byl opakovaně využíván v knižních ilustracích a na mnoha obalech knih.
