As the barrier of misinformation about Jim grew, I realized that those who should have been heard - the people he trusted most, those he traveled with, shared his time and thoughts with, namely his friends - were not being listened to at all. So I began to contact Jim's friends one by one, hoping that my questions would elicit firsthand information and meaningful observations. This book focuses on elements and facts that illuminate an extraordinary human being. The intent of these fragments of memories is to outline a more accurate, realistic, and understandable portrait of Jim. By evaluating the observations of those who knew Jim, each reader can arrive at their own conclusions about who he was and the significance of his life. Americká noc je druhým svazkem Morrisonovy poezie a textů posmrtně vydaných nakladatelstvím Villard Books, které takto završuje své úsilí započaté vydáním Divočiny v roce 1988. Cílem bylo vydat, v nejlepší a nejucelenější podobě, veškerou autorovu tvorbu. Materiál obsažený v těchto knihách pochází především z deníků, zápisníků, rukopisů a nezařazených, ručně psaných listů, které Morrison zanechal v péči své manželky Pamely v době své smrti v roce 1971 v Paříži. Kromě mnoha básní jsou obsaženy ve sbírce i Morrisonovy zásadní písňové texty (Americká modlitba, Oslava ještěrky, Konec, Až ta hudba skončí, Tichá paráda) a scénář k nedokončenému filmu Stopař.
