Celým jménem Lloyd Chudley Alexander se narodil 30. ledna 1924 ve Philadelphii. Už v patnácti letech se rozhodl, že se stane spisovatelem. Jeho rodiče byli ovšem proti, a proto mu našli místo bankovního poslíčka. Po několika nespokojených letech narukoval do armády. Během své služby načerpal mnoho inspirace pro svou pozdějších literární tvorbu, především pro Kroniky Prydainu. Konec války strávil ve Francii, kde se také seznámil se svou budoucí ženou Janine Denni. Po válce se vrátil se svou manželkou a dcerou Madeline zpět do Philadelphie, kde žil až do své smrti v roce 2007.
