    Fritz Reuter Leiber Jr. byl jedním z nejzajímavějších mladých autorů, kteří se objevili v blízkosti H. P. Lovecrafta, a část jeho nejlepší rané krátké fikce spadá do žánru hororu spíše než do sci-fi či fantasy. Svůj zralý hlas nalezl brzy v prvním ze svých dobrodružství mečů a magie, v nichž vystupují velký citlivý barbar Fafhrd a malý, lstivý pouličník Šedý Myšák. K této sérii se v průběhu své kariéry vracel, občas ji využíval pro frašku a jindy pro ponuré náladové kusy. Leiberova sci-fi zahrnuje planetu drtící román, ve kterém většina rozsáhlého ansámblu přežije potopu, oheň a sexuální pozornost kočičích mimozemšťanů, a satirický příběh, v němž vůdce revoluce a nalezení pravé lásky se ujme vychrtlý herec z Měsíce v egzoskeletovém obleku. Leiberova pozdní krátká fikce a vynikající hororový román kombinují autobiografická témata, jako je jeho boj s depresí a alkoholismem, s meditacemi o emocionálním obsahu fantastických žánrů. Leiberova schopnost nekonečné sebereinventace a produktivního sebepoznání ho udržela až do jeho smrti jako jednoho z nejmodernějších autorů své sci-fi generace.
