John Anthony Burgess Wilson (25. února 1917 Manchester – 22. listopadu 1993 Londýn) byl britský romanopisec, básník, filmový scenárista, hudební skladatel, klavírista, libretista, učitel, jazykovědec, kritik v oblasti literatury, filmu, divadla, ale také gastronomie.
Hlavní hrdina knihy, vůdce mladých násilníků Alex, tráví většinu svého času konzumací drog, přepadání a znásilňováním bezbranných obětí a – paradoxně – poslechem Beethovenovy hudby... Pak je však zatčen a donucen podstoupit „terapeutický“ experiment, který si v mnohém nezadá s krutostí jeho chuligánské minulosti.
Jde o svéráznou fiktivní románovou biografii Williama Shakespeara, jež však výrazně vybočuje z řady literárních děl o tomto dramatikovi. Burgessův Shakespeare je totiž především lidskou bytostí s několika přednostmi a mnoha slabostmi. Dozvíme se například, že byl sveden svou pozdější manželkou, když se vracel opilý z knajpy, že měl homosexuální sklony (jeho milencem byl sám hrabě ze Southamptonu, oblíbenec královny Alžběty), že postava z jeho slavných Sonetů byla přístavní děvka… Burgess rovněž podporuje teorii, že ho žena podváděla s jeho bratrem a že jeho syn Hammet byl předobrazem Hamleta.
