In 1776 the US proclaimed its independence. It was not until 1817 that Austrian Emperor Franz I ordered the establishment of a Consulate in the US, which led to the arrival in 1820 of the first Consul in New York City. This book describes when, where, and why 53 Consulates of Austria (-Hungary) were established in the US from 1820 to the present. It describes the Consuls, their daily work and challenges - including pan-Slavic activities before 1914. It offers a glimpse at the living conditions of the immigrants and migrant workers who came to the US from the Empire before WWI, reflecting the sentiment (1911) that „in no country the foreigner, and particularly the uneducated foreigner, is more in need of protection than in the United States“. In 1922 the Republic of Austria opened its first Consular Offices in New York and Chicago, and today Austria maintains 30 Consulates throughout the US.

Tucked away at the outskirts of Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, a group of civilian and military cemeteries tells the story of the Armenian, Greek, Italian and other smaller communities in Addis Ababa during the 20th century and their contribution to the development of he country to the few visitors who know of their existence. The author was able to identify more than 3700 tombs in the Greek Orthodox, Armenian and Catholic cemeteries at Gulele, Addis Ababa. The Cimitero Militare Italiano and the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, situated side by side, are testimony to the history of Ethiopia between 1935 and 1941. The small Jewish cemetery is even less known than the Christian cemeteries at Gulele. Another small cemetery is located - off limits - in the British Embassy Compound. All these cemeteries are a part of Ethiopia's history and a symbol for the hospitality the Ethiopian people offered to foreigners.

Die Schwarzmeer-Region bildet seit 2008 einen Schwerpunkt der Außenpolitik Österreichs. Das Buch untersucht die Präsenz Österreichs in der Ukraine seit 1785 und die Geschichte der fremden Konsulate in Galizien und der Bukowina zwischen 1816 und 1918.

Das Handbuch dokumentiert sämtliche konsularischen Vertretungen der Donaumonarchie in auswärtigen Staaten, basierend auf historischen Quellen. Von den 18. Jahrhundert bis 1918 gab es etwa 725 Konsulatssitze, die im Laufe der Zeit hinzugekommen oder weggefallen sind. Der Autor, Prof. Dr. Rudolf Agstner (†), ein erfahrener Diplomat und Historiker der auswärtigen Beziehungen, hat über Jahrzehnte die Kerndaten der Konsulate gesammelt, einschließlich ihrer Gründungszeit, Rang, Adressen sowie Namen, Amtszeiten und Lebensdaten der Konsuln. Die Konsulate werden alphabetisch nach Staaten und innerhalb der Staaten nach Konsulatssitzen aufgelistet, wobei die Namen der Funktionäre und ihre Amtszeiten chronologisch angeordnet sind. Um die Nutzung für heutige Leser zu erleichtern, werden die gegenwärtigen Staatsgrenzen als Ausgangspunkt genommen. Ein Namensregister ermöglicht das schnelle Auffinden von Personen. Dieses Handbuch ist ein unverzichtbares Hilfsmittel für die Geschichte der auswärtigen Beziehungen und bietet eine umfassende, faktenreiche Darstellung der konsularischen Vertretungen der Donaumonarchie, die bisher in dieser Form fehlte.
