Každá oblast dává horolezecké výstupy do kontextu jednoduchého historického vývoje regionu. Nejprve jsou zde uvedeni dnes žijící horolezci a lezci z nedávné historie (Diemberger, Habeler, Hillary, Kurtyka, Scott, Venables), potom jednotlivé výčty osobních pamětihodných výkonů nabízející názorný pohled do charakterových vlastností těch, kdo se rozhodli žít za hranicemi každodenních zkušeností. 16 s. obr. příl.

Od roku 1921 začaly pokusy dostat se na vrchol Mount Everest. Podařilo se to v roce 1953 britské expedici vedené Johnem Huntem, kdy na vrcholu stanuli novozélandský horolezec Edmund Hillary a nepálský šerpský horolezec Tenzing Norkey. A právě o tomto prvním vydařeném výstupu je obsah této knihy.

Their achievement provided one answer to the many questions about high-altitude survival which had been asked from the beginning of the century.
