Klimt is regarded as the painter of women. Each of his female portraits is surrounded by a web of rumors and speculations regarding the artist's erotic escapades. Without women offering themselves as a morning gift to his art, Klimt is simply unimaginable. Like a tapestry of blooming flowers, they encircle his work. His subjects include Viennese women, girls from the working class, ladies of high society, Jewish women, and aristocrats. He knew them intimately, living in their fragrant sphere. He became their herald, one of the very few who recognized the modern European woman. No other artist has so complexly and nuancedly explored the facets of women in his work.
