In 1898 Martha's Vineyard, Ida Russell, once a promising painter at Boston's Museum School, has transformed into Ida Pease, a farmer's wife. Five years into her marriage with Ezra, who has become neglectful and unreliable, she finds herself managing the farm and its duties alongside a part-time worker, Lem. Ezra, more interested in card games than his salvage business, often neglects his responsibilities, leaving Ida to shoulder the burden.
