In this companion book to New Kid, Jordan’s friend Drew takes center stage in a story about being one of the few kids of color in a prestigious private school. Eighth grader Drew Ellis is familiar with the saying, “You have to work twice as hard to be just as good,” a lesson instilled in him by his grandmother. However, he struggles with the reality that even working ten times as hard may not afford him the same opportunities as his privileged classmates at Riverdale Academy Day School. Compounding his challenges, Drew begins to feel that his good friend Liam may be one of those privileged kids. As he grapples with these feelings, he finds it difficult to maintain his friendships, even with mutual friend Jordan. As the pressures mount, Drew must navigate the divide between him and his friends, striving for acceptance and understanding. Ultimately, the journey leads him to confront the most important question of all: can he accept himself?
