The Riverworld, a vast, seemingly artificial planet crisscrossed by a river valley millions of kilometers long, serves as a site of rebirth for humanity. Every human being who has walked the Earth in the last two million years finds themselves naked on the riverbank after death. However, the Riverworld is not a paradise but a hell. Power struggles and brutality abound. Those enslaved and tormented who attempt to end their miserable existence through suicide awaken the next day reborn at another point along the river. Mark Twain and John Lackland, the giant Neanderthal Joe Miller, the French adventurer Cyrano de Bergerac, and the fighter pilot Baron von Richthofen join forces to realize Mark Twain's dream: to build a great riverboat and travel upstream. A colossal task with the primitive means available, and a nearly insurmountable social and political challenge.
