However, historian Linda Hirshman highlights the critical role of Chapman, who expressed doubts about Douglass' loyalty and revealed the underlying racism within Boston abolitionist circles. Hirshman’s analysis argues that the eventual split was a strategic success. Douglass emerged as a prominent Black activist, leveraging his influence to sway the Republican Party and President Abraham Lincoln. This alliance's dissolution ultimately contributed to the abolition of slavery, marking a significant moment in American history, even as racism persisted.
