The twin Spanish Peaks in southern Colorado, towering at 13,623 feet, have historically attracted diverse groups, from Native Americans to Spanish explorers seeking gold. The peaks served as a landmark for migrants on the Santa Fe Trail and later drew settlers during the coal mining boom in the 1870s.
