In Miami, rookie cop Tito Morales responds to a disturbance at the Trianon hotel and witnesses a wealthy oil man fall ten stories, impaling himself on a fence. Detective Jimmy Paz, known for solving the infamous Voodoo Murders, joins Morales at the scene. Inside the dead man's room, they encounter Emmylou Dideroff, an enigmatic woman in a trance who asks to confess and requests a pen and notebooks. Her writings surprise Paz, prompting him to involve psychologist Lorna Wise to decipher the disturbing revelations within. Emmylou's accounts include childhood abuse, other crimes, and claims of communion with saints and the devil. The investigation raises questions about her mental state and the authenticity of her beliefs as various individuals, including Paz's biological father, show a keen interest in the notebooks' contents and seek to keep them hidden. Emmylou's "confession" leads the trio on a perilous journey, forcing them to confront profound questions about faith, love, and the miraculous.
