The 30th Council of Europe Art Exhibition explores the theme of freedom in Europe since 1945, curated by Monika Flacke, Henry Meyric Hughes, and Ulrike Schmiegelt. It poses critical questions about our desired way of living, the roles of politics, the state, and society in enabling us to lead fulfilling lives, and whether the pursuit of a socially and ecologically secure future is a fundamental human right. Featuring works from 113 artists across 28 European countries, the exhibition transcends historical divisions to showcase a diverse array of perspectives on freedom. Rather than focusing solely on the Cold War's ideological confrontations, it traces the shared roots of democracy and socialism in Enlightenment ideals, particularly Freedom, Equality, and Human Rights. The exhibition is organized into 12 thematic sections, or 'chapters,' addressing concepts like Reason, Utopia, Consumerism, Force, Sustainability, and Self-Knowledge, prompting reflection on societal living. Notable artists, including Ian Hamilton Finlay, Damien Hirst, and Gerhard Richter, challenge viewers to contemplate their own life choices and the broader implications of freedom in contemporary society.
