Více o knize

A thousand years after a nuclear holocaust in the United States, only a few have survived the war and subsequent plagues. Their descendants have reverted to a "wild" existence, roaming the vast, partially radioactive land as hunters or barricading themselves in small fortified settlements. Gradually, cultural centers begin to emerge, such as Pelbar, the citadel on the Heart River, formerly the Mississippi. Dangerous expeditions commence to explore the post-apocalyptic wilderness of the American continent. Each spring, the Shumai, hunters of the expansive prairies and forests, gather at a "blank spot," as they call the barren, radioactive craters, to witness the appearance of a staff that mysteriously emerges from a dome-shaped rise and disappears after a while. The Shumai believe it to be magic from the Ancients, until they accidentally discover that people live inside the dome—descendants of those who survived the atomic war in a bunker system and have not ventured to the surface for centuries.
