Hans and Inge Wendler, Jewish intellectuals imperiled by Hitler's burgeoning power, make their way through a Europe dissolving into chaos, at a time when their own life together is threatened by Hans's obsessive affair with a mysterious young woman. Told in the form of diaries, letters, interviews, and poems, and shaded by the ideas and life of German Marxist and mystic Walter Benjamin, who appears as a character in the narrative.
