Po Křišťálové noci jeho rodina prchá z Německa. Helmuth odešel do Singapuru, jeho rodiče odpluli do Jižní Ameriky. Toto oddělení od rodiny zapříčinilo jeho nezávislou, kočovnou existenci, která trvala po celý život. Proslavil se svými kontroverzními snímky modelek a aktů, které mu zajistily pověst provokatéra módní fotografie a staly se charakteristickou známkou Vogue. Svět Helmuta Newtona je nanejvýš složitý a mnohovrstevný. Jestliže bylo jeho dílo považováno v 60. letech za šokující a provokativní, dnes se ukazuje, že Helmut Newton předvídal obraz ženy, jak se nám jeví na počátku nového tisíciletí: ženy, která raději sama udává tón, než aby se podřizovala, ženy, která se těší z překypující vitality svého těla, o němž sama rozhoduje, ženy zodpovědné za sebe i svoje touhy. Tato kniha společně s výstavou v berlínské Neue Nationalgalerie představila Newtonovo dílo v celé šíři a oslavila 80. narozeniny tohoto výjimečného fotografa, který se narodil v roce 1920 v Berlíně.

Sie kamen, wurden gesehen und siegen noch immer.

Portraits der Schönen, Erfolgreichen und Superreichen machten Helmut Newton weltberühmt: In ihrer unnachahmlichen Mischung aus Erotik, Eleganz und luxuriöser Dekadenz bieten seine Photographien das delikate Spiegelbild für den weiblichen Exhibitionismus auf höchstem ästhetischen Niveau. Der von Marshall Blonsky eingeleitete Band enthält 40 seiner besten Arbeiten.

Mastering fashion photography early on, Newton’s shoots often blurred the lines between reality and illusion, with a clear aesthetic that permeated his fashion, portraiture, and nude photography. Women, including icons like Catherine Deneuve and Liz Taylor, take center stage in his work. Newton moved beyond traditional narratives, infusing his fashion photography with luxurious elegance, subtle seduction, cultural references, and humor. In the 1990s, he contributed to various international editions of Vogue, primarily shooting in Monte Carlo, where he lived from 1981. He transformed everyday locations into minimalist theatrical stages, portraying the eccentric lives of the wealthy with eroticism and elegance. Newton often questioned visual clichés with self-irony and empathy. This book, accompanying an international exhibition tour, showcases highlights from his prolific career, including rediscovered images, celebrating his lasting influence on modern photography and visual art. The exhibition will be on view at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin from October 31, 2021, to May 22, 2022.
