Rozsáhlé dílo od Eidžiho Jošikawy je i po sedmdesáti letech nejpopulárnějším japonským historickým románem. Děj se odehrává na počátku 17. století po skončení vleklých válek, kdy rod Tokugawa nastolil nový řád a zajistil mír na více než dvě a půl století. Japonsko bylo zaplaveno potulnými samuraji bez pána, kteří toužili po slávě a bohatství. Hlavní hrdina, Mijamoto Musaši, byl zpočátku jedním z nich, ale po pečlivém studiu cesty meče se vypracoval na skutečného samuraje. Nechtěl místo u mocného knížete a vydal se na cestu zdokonalení, jejímž cílem bylo dosažení dokonalého probuzení a vylepšení šermířské techniky. Musaši porážel soupeře díky svému čistému srdci a nezdolnému odhodlání, vytvořil vlastní školu boje se dvěma meči a později osvětlil svou filozofii v Knize pěti kruhů. Avšak nebyl jen bezcitným bojovníkem, ale i milujícím mužem, který si lásku odepíral až do rozhodujícího souboje se Sasaki Kodžiró. Nakonec to byl Mijamoto Musaši, kdo zůstal v paměti jako nejslavnější samuraj všech dob. Jošikawova fabulace vytvořila obraz Musašiho jako nejlepšího šermíře a muže, který dosáhl dokonalosti ve všech aspektech osobnostního rozvoje. Dílo se stalo synonymem pro Jošikawovo jméno a stanovilo hranice žánru, který dodnes těší značné oblibě.

Píše se konec šestnáctého století. Feudálním Japonskem zmítá nelítostná a zdánlivě nekonečná občanská válka, zemí se sem a tam valí armády a císař v Kjótu již nedokáže nastolit pořádek. Sjednocení Japonska pod nadvládou jednoho rodu je cíl nesmírně ambiciózní, a přece zcela zaměstnává několik mocných: mezi jinými i Nobunagu Odu a jeho nástupce Hidejošiho Tojotomiho, syna zchudlého samuraje. Román Taiko (titul, pod nímž je Hidejoši znám v Japonsku dodnes) je příběhem tohoto sjednocení, velkolepou kronikou mnoha vojenských tažení a politických intrik, působivou výpovědí o samurajské mentalitě a haiku o tisíci stránkách, jak o něm trefně poznamenal jeho mistrný překladatel Tomáš Hrách.
