Rozsáhlé dílo od Eidžiho Jošikawy je po sedmdesáti letech stále nejpopulárnějším japonským historickým románem. Děj se odehrává na počátku 17. století, kdy po vleklých válkách vládu nad Japonskem převzal rod Tokugawa, čímž nastolil mírový řád. Země je však zaplavena potulnými samuraji, kteří touží po slávě a bohatství. Hlavní hrdina, Mijamoto Musaši, začíná jako jeden z nich, ale po pečlivém studiu meče se z něj stává skutečný samuraj. Nezajímá se o mocné knížecí postavení a vydává se na cestu za dokonalostí, jejímž cílem je dosažení probuzení a vylepšení šermířské techniky. Jeho úspěchy pramení z čistého srdce a nezdolného odhodlání, což mu umožňuje porazit slavné bojovníky a založit vlastní školu boje se dvěma meči, kterou později popisuje ve své Knize pěti kruhů. Musaši není jen bezcitným bojovníkem, ale také milujícím mužem, který si lásku odepírá až do rozhodujícího souboje se svým nejsilnějším sokem, Sasaki Kodžiró. Jošikawova fabulace z Musašiho činí nejen jednoho z nejlepších šermířů, ale i muže, který dosahuje dokonalosti ve všech aspektech osobnostního rozvoje. Dílo se stalo synonymem pro Jošikawovo jméno a stanovilo hranice žánru, čímž se Musaši stal nejlépe vystavěným japonským historickým románem.

Nejdojímavější scény zachycují loučení poražených bojovníků s rodinami a jejich seppuku, často následované blízkými.
