Země je však zaplavena potulnými samuraji, kteří touží po slávě a bohatství. Hlavní hrdina, Mijamoto Musaši, začíná jako jeden z nich, ale po pečlivém studiu meče se z něj stává skutečný samuraj. Nezajímá se o mocné knížecí postavení a vydává se na cestu za dokonalostí, jejímž cílem je dosažení probuzení a vylepšení šermířské techniky. Jeho úspěchy pramení z čistého srdce a nezdolného odhodlání, což mu umožňuje porazit slavné bojovníky a založit vlastní školu boje se dvěma meči, kterou později popisuje ve své Knize pěti kruhů.
