Sappho ist eine der am häufigsten übersetzten antiken Autoren. Die kostbaren Bruchstücke ihrer wunderbar persönlichen Liebesdichtung bedürfen immer wieder neuer Bemühung um eine angemessene Wiedergabe und einer sie dem heutigen Leser erschließenden Erklärung.

Den Einschränkungen, denen Frauen in der Gesellschaft häufig unterworfen sind, vermochten sich auch die Dichterinnen nicht zu entziehen, aber die Lyrik verschaffte ihnen eine Möglichkeit, Bedürfnisse und Erfahrungen zur Geltung zu bringen, die sonst unterdrückt oder verschwiegen werden mussten. So zieht sich die Spannung zwischen kreativer Selbstbehauptung und sozialen Normen, zwischen Anpassung und verdeckter Auflehnung durch die Gedichte vieler Jahrhunderte.
