V květnu 1941 pronikla německá bitevní loď Bismarck, tehdy nejmohutnější válečná loď na světě, v rámci operace Rheinübung do Atlantiku, a vážně tak ohrozila obchodní trasy, na nichž byla Británie životně závislá. Britská admiralita zorganizovala mohutnou akci, jejímž jediným cílem bylo její vypátrání, uštvání a potopení. Do pronásledování, jež se v osmi dnech odehrávalo na nesmírných oceánských prostorách, do nějž se zapojili i příslušníci jiných národností a při němž přišlo o život přes 4000 námořníků, bylo zapojeno několik desítek lodí… Krátce po půl jedenácté 27. května 1941 se nad planoucím vrakem bývalé pýchy německého válečného námořnictva zavřela neklidná hladina Atlantiku. Skončila tím i jedna z velkých událostí historie námořního válčení a zaujala místo vedle bitev u Salaminy, Lepanta, anglického loďstva s Armadou, u Trafalgaru, Cušimy, Jutska, Midwaye a v Korálovém moři.
