V květnu 1941 pronikla německá bitevní loď Bismarck, tehdy nejmohutnější válečná loď na světě, v rámci operace Rheinübung do Atlantiku, a vážně tak ohrozila obchodní trasy, na nichž byla Británie životně závislá. Britská admiralita zorganizovala mohutnou akci, jejímž jediným cílem bylo její vypátrání, uštvání a potopení. The 36 murders of the title are those for which convicted men were either executed or served long terms of imprisonment for crimes which they were later found not to have committed. The two immoral earnings refers to the case of Stephen Ward of Profumo fame. Ludovic Kennedy asks what lessons are to be learned, looking at police corruption and judicial complacency in this miscarriages of justice.
