Dílo Richarda Brautigana, který bývá označován za posledního a zároveň nejliterárnějšího z prozaiků „Beat generation“, uzavřela v roce 1984 autorova smrt, avšak vloni (roku 2000) ve Spojených státech vyšla kniha „Nešťastná žena: cesta“ (tentýž text byl nejprve vydán francouzsky pod názvem „Sešit o návratu z Tróje“ ve Francii v roce 1994). Podtitul „Cesta“ poslední Brautiganovu knihu dostatečně charakterizuje – autor v deníkových zápisech z roku 1982 líčí své hektické přesuny mezi Aljaškou, Havají, Kalifornií a rančem v Montaně a vůbec svůj neuspořádaný pijácký život. Na této cestě se vyrovnává se sebevraždou své známé (když k jeho vlastní sebevraždě zbývaly ještě dva roky), se složitým vztahem ke své dceři a zkrachovalými vztahy partnerskými.
