Sleduje postupné osvobozování zemí násilně začleněných do nacistické říše a dobývání Německa až do závěrečné kapitulace.

Ofenzíva Bomber Command (velitelství bombardovacího letectva RAF) proti Německu za druhé světové války byla jednou z nejvýznamnějších ukázek ozbrojeného boje. Vše začalo tím, že Winston Churchill neviděl jinou cestu k vítězství. Anglie tehdy v roce 1940 stála proti Německu osamocena. Ofenzíva byla podniknuta s téměř mesiášským úsilím celé jedné generace starších letců, kteří byli odhodláni dokázat, že strategické letecké bombardování může samo o sobě být rozhodujícím pro dosažení vítězství. Špioni, šifry a odbojová hnutí 1939–1945. Kniha Maxe Hastingse rozhodně není vyčerpávajícím líčením tajné války ve druhé světové válce. Autor se zaměřil na konkrétní přiblížení prostředků, jaké obě strany v této tajné válce používaly, a postav, které je ovlivnily. Je málo pravděpodobné, že se odtajní další skutečnosti – možná kdyby Vladimír Putin zveřejnil sovětské archivy… Většina publikovaných děl se zaměřuje na výzvědnou činnost té které země. Autor se v této knize rozhodl zkoumat otázku výzvědné činnosti v celosvětovém měřítku. Četné knihy o zpravodajské činnosti za druhé světové války se zaměřují na to, čeho špioni (nebo osoby, které se snažily prolomit šifrovací kódy) dosáhli, záleží však pouze na tom, do jaké míry změnily získané tajné informace vývoj událostí. Sovětská špionáž byla svým rozsahem mnohem větší, než jakou se mohla pochlubit kterákoliv jiná bojující strana, a poskytla Rusům nesmírně cenné informace technického charakteru pocházející z Británie a ze Spojených států, nicméně Stalinova paranoia využívání tajných politických a vojenských materiálů nepřátel ochromovala. Kniha Maxe Hastingse je skvěle propracovaná a především historicky podložená a přesná. Ačkoli mnohé akce popisuje velmi detailně, je čtivá a nechybí v ní (na pozadí tragických událostí druhé světové války) ani humor.
