Candide je románem nebo spíše filosofickou povídkou, v níž autor popisuje neutuchající lásku, rozličná utrpení, jež prožívají hlavní postavy příběhu během svých pestrých dobrodružných životů, kritizuje rovněž společenské hodnoty, založené na zlodějství, a optimismus, jenž je v díle propagován filosofem Panglosem, přesvědčeným, že vše je zařízeno dobře, i když se nám daří špatně, a vyzdvihuje práci, jež je vysvobozením člověka od všech útrap společnosti a díky níž se stává život alespoň trochu snesitelným.... celý text
