Náboženství a dodržování koránu představují základní osu života a je nemyslitelné, že by se někdo vzepřel. Základní vzdělání spočívá v doslovném odříkávání koránu. V podstatě jde o indoktrinaci, která zahrnuje mechanické opakování jednotlivých veršů, prokládané přednáškami o tom, jak je třeba nenávidět Židy, stát Izrael, americké imperialisty a všechny nevěřící, kteří jsou zodpovědní za špatné postavení muslimů ve světě (i Ayaan chodila do takové školy). Tento druh „vzdělání“ probíhá nejen v arabských zemích, ale i v madrasách na britské či francouzské půdě.
