Poznáte démony, mágy, okultisty i šílence, pětsetleté žebračky a Smrt se slabostí pro Mary Poppinsovou. Říct o téhle knize, že je kult, je asi tak stejně výstižné, jako prohlásit o Albertu Einsteinovi, že byl docela dobrej na fyziku.

Po Zemi kráčí ďábel. Na počátku byl Lucifer - Světlonoš svržen z nebe, aby vládl peklu. Jenže pak na tento úřad rezignoval a opustil své království, aby se mohl usadit ve městě smrtelníků zvaném Los Angeles. Nejznámější vedlejší postava z cenami ověnčené série Neila Gaimana Sandman si teď užívá poklidný důchod jako majitel exkluzivního hudebního baru Lux v L.A. Ale mise, kterou ho chce pověřit sám Stvořitel, to všechno může změnit. Pokud Lucifer bude souhlasit s tím, že udělá za nebe špinavou práci, může si stanovit vlastní cenu. Logan zase jednou nemá dobrý den. Nejdřív havaruje s letadlem v podivných pustých horách. Pak potká malou holčičku, která trvá na tom, aby zachránil ji a jejího tatíka, který pod hladinou jezera zadržuje dech. A k tomu všemu se ještě přimotá "strejda" Bruce Banner, kterého je lepší nerozčilovat, jinak se promění v zelené monstrum schopné pouze výroku: "Hulk se zlobí. Hulk zmlátí."

Maxx je bezdomovec, který žije v papírové krabici a který sám sebe vidí jako klasického superhrdinu. Pomáhá mu Julie Wintersová, sociální pracovnice na volné noze. Maxx se občas propadá do jiného světa, do "Pustiny". Tam je skutečným hrdinou, tam zachraňuje Julii před podivnými příšerami a před svým úhlavním nepřítelem panem Pryč. Pan Pryč si ovšem jako jediný pamatuje své cesty mezi skutečným světem a Pustinou - tudíž třímá klíč k Juliiným i Maxxovým tajemstvím. První ze šesti knih surreálného comicsového seriálu MAXX.
