V kostele se náhodou setkají se třemi mladíky (Pamfineem, Filostratem a Dioneem), které přemluví, aby s nimi odešli z města. Poté se odeberou do jakéhosi sídla. Domluví se, že každý den bude zvolen král či královna a každý den si všichni připraví příběh na dané téma pro ostatní. Každý den je tedy vyprávěno 10 příběhů. Po deset dní přebývají v sídle a jedenáctý se vrátí zpět do Florencie, kde mladíci zanechají dámy v Santa Maria Novelle, na místě, na kterém se s nimi poprvé setkali.
